Play, Focus, & Emotional Support with Aromatherapy Bubble Mix

The image shows a group of six delicate soap bubbles floating against a soft, overcast sky. The bubbles have a translucent quality with subtle, iridescent hues of pink, green, blue, and purple reflecting on their surfaces, creating a gentle, whimsical effect.

Whether you’re looking for a spontaneous outdoor activity, a creative break during homeschool, or a fun way to calm those big emotions, this bubble mix is a versatile addition to your emotional toolkit.

My younger son and I can spend hours outside blowing bubbles together. It’s one of our favourite ways to connect, spend time in nature, and help each other regulate our bodies. There’s something truly magical about watching bubbles float and pop in the sunlight – it’s a simple but powerful way to reset and reconnect.

Aromatherapy Bubble Mix Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup liquid castile soap (for a gentle, non-toxic option)
  • 1/2 cup glycerine (for stronger, longer-lasting bubbles)
  • 15 drops essential oils (recommendations below)
  • Glass jar for storage
  • Bubble wands of your choice (we use these but tip out the toxic mix and use our own)
A close-up of a single, iridescent soap bubble floating against a soft, blue-gray sky. The bubble reflects hints of pink and white from the surrounding light, creating a delicate, otherworldly effect. Faint traces of smaller bubbles are visible in the background, blending seamlessly into the cloudy atmosphere.

Instructions

  • Combine the Base Ingredients: Add the water, glycerine, and liquid castile soap to a glass jar or container in this order. Gently stir to mix, avoiding too many suds.
  • Add Essential Oils: Add your chosen essential oils and gently stir again to combine.
  • Let It Rest (Optional): For even stronger, longer-lasting bubbles, let your mix sit overnight.
  • Get Bubbling: Pour into a shallow dish, grab your bubble wands, and enjoy the magic!
  • Store: Keep your bubble mix in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid for up to a week.

Why Bubbles Are Great for Calming Big Emotions

Blowing bubbles isn’t just about fun – it’s also a powerful way to help kids regulate their emotions. The act of taking a deep breath in and slowly exhaling to create a bubble encourages mindful, controlled breathing, which can be incredibly calming. It’s a simple, playful way for kids to practice self-regulation without even realising it.

Essential Oil Blend Suggestions

Here are a few of my favourite aromatherapy bubble mix recipes for different moods and activities:

  • For Focus: Peppermint and Vetiver or Thinker
  • For Energy: Wild Orange and Lemon or Brave
  • For Calming: Lavender or Calmer
  • For Grounding: Frankincense, Balance or Steady
  • For a Mood Boost: Lemon, Lime, and Bergamot or Stronger

Tips for the Best Bubbles

  • Use distilled or filtered water for the clearest, longest-lasting bubbles.
  • Gently swirl your bubble mix before each use to redistribute the essential oils.
  • Experiment with different wands – some make giant bubbles, while others create a flurry of tiny ones.
  • Try using long slow breaths to create ginormous bubbles. My son and I love creating huge bubbles with a regular wand.

The largest bubble in the foreground has a clear, reflective surface, while the smaller bubble above it shows subtle iridescent colors, creating a contrast between the delicate bubbles and the textured, natural background.

These photos were taken by my younger son. One of the things I love about homeschooling is the flexibility it gives us. I asked him to take some photos for me for my website. We negotiated a price and he delivered these images.
