Aromatherapy Playdough is the perfect mix of creativity and emotional support, offering a hands-on activity with calming benefits for both kids and parents. Simple to make and endlessly adaptable, it’s more than just fun – it’s a tool to help with focus, grounding, energy, sleep, and managing big emotions.

In this post, I’ll share my tried and true aromatherapy playdough recipe and guide you through making your own playdough, with both traditional stovetop and Thermomix methods. Once you’ve got your dough, the magic happens! By adding a few drops of essential oils, you can tailor it to your children’s needs. Whether you’re looking to create a soothing bedtime ritual, boost focus during homeschool activities, or just help your kids unwind, this activity is a practical and creative way to incorporate essential oils into your routine.

Aromatherapy Playdough Recipe

Ingredients

  • 110 g salt
  • 250 g water
  • 1 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 250g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp oil (coconut or vegetable)
  • 5-10 drops essential oils
  • food colouring

Method: Thermomix

Place the salt into the Thermomix bowl and mix on Speed 10 for 5 seconds.
Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add the water and cream of tartar and cook for 5 minutes, 60 degrees, Speed 3.
Leave to cool for 5 minutes.
Add the plain flour and the oil and mix together for 50 seconds, Speed 4.
Knead for 1 minute on Interval Speed.
Check the texture and if it’s a little sticky, add some more flour and knead for a further 30 seconds.
Place the playdough into a bowl and add the essential oils and food colouring. Knead until the colour is evenly dispersed.
Store in an airtight container.

Method: Stovetop

Place the salt, water, cream of tartar and plain flour in a saucepan over medium heat.
Stir continuously until thickened. Leave the mixture to cool.
Place the dough onto a well-floured board or bench.
Add the oil and knead it through really well.
Add the essential oils and food colouring  and knead until the colour is evenly dispersed.
Store in an airtight container.

Essential Oil Blend Suggestions

  • For sleep: Lavender or Calmer.
  • For focus: Vetiver and Litsea or Thinker.
  • For grounding: Frankincense or Steady.
  • For energy: Wild Orange and Peppermint or Brave.
  • For a mood boost: Lemon, Lime and Bergamot or Stronger.
  • For stress relief: Bergamot and Sandalwood or Adaptiv.
