How do I use my essential oils?

There are many way to experience the benefits of essential oils and the good news is you don’t need to be an expert to do so. With a basic understanding of how to use your oils safely and simply you’ll be incorporating them into your daily routine in no time. Let’s start by looking at the three most common ways to use essential oils; aromatically, topically and internally.

Aromatic

Using essential oils aromatically is as simple as breathing them in. Aromatic application of essential oils has traditionally been used to support emotions and enhance your mood. In fact studies show using essential oils aromatically can have a significant impact on your mood and emotional health.

Topical

Topical use of essential oils is one of the fastest and simplest ways to enjoy their benefits. Applying an essential oil directly to the body allows you to target specific areas in need of support. And in fact, you are actually able to simultaneously provide topical and aromatic benefits in the one application.

Internal

The debate around internal use of essential oils is ongoing. However, research shows that when used correctly internal essential oil use offers benefits that aromatic and topical applications cannot. In fact, through our diets essential oils are most likely already part of your daily routine.

When you first use essential oils remember to start gradually.


Essential oils are highly concentrated and individuals can have different reactions just like they can with medicines, foods and other products. Therefore it’s best to start slowly and observe your body’s responses.

If you’re applying your oils topically, start with a drop, mixed with a carrier oil, and pay attention to your skin’s response. Once you’re happy with the result and you haven’t have an adverse reaction you’ll be ready to apply them to a larger patch of skin. However it’s important to remember that not all essential oils can be applied topically so it’s important to always read the instructions of the particular oil before applying.

When diffusing essential oils it’s best to test it in a single room for a short period before moving it to your main living space. Ideally try to use a large, well-ventilated room and keep your kids and pets out of the test area. 

It’s important that you follow the guidelines for each essential oil you are using. For example certain oils are toxic when inhaled in large doses, whereas others will cause skin reactions if applied topically. Every essential oil is different, so you must follow the instructions on the bottle to use them properly.
