Essential oils for ADHD can vary depending on the individual and their specific needs. However, for my neurodivergent family, and most families I work with Vetiver is at the top of the list. Read on to discover why.
My dōTERRA upline recently asked for my essential oil recommendations for ADHD. Specifically, my suggestions to create an essential oil roller for a 4 year old with ADHD and bigs ups and downs. After putting my reply together I thought I would add it here, expanding a little to provide some extra info.
My Recommended Essential Oils for ADHD
When my two AuAHD (autistic/ADHD combined) boys were young I had success with both Lavender and Vetiver essential oils. And we still use both often – they are 12 and 15 now.
Lavender was great when they had had a shock. In fact our first experience with essential oils was when my son cut his hand badly on an oyster shell. A friend rolled some lavender oil onto his wrists and he calmed down instantly. For support with big emotions I always reach for Vetiver first.
I try and have both oils diluted in rollers on hand at all times. For a four year old I’d use a 2-3% dilution so about 5 drops in a 10ml roller. As for application, if in the middle of a meltdown I just aim to roll it onto them anywhere possible (IYKYK). Otherwise if they are ok with the smell I ideally like to roll it onto their wrists and behind their ears. If someone has sensory issues related to smell go for the soles of the feet and back of the neck.
On an ongoing basis I’d apply Vetiver 3 times a day.
So Why Vetiver?
Vetiver essential oil, derived from the roots of a grass native to India, features a unique aroma described as woody, smoky, exotic, and sweet. People have used it in skin care, perfume, and cologne since the Middle Ages.
Extracted through hydro distillation, Vetiver oil is a thick amber-colored liquid used for its therapeutic benefits. This incredibly versatile oil calms the nervous system, nourishes the skin, and improves sleep quality.
These qualities make Vetiver essential oil a must have in your toolbox to support emotional regulation and wellbeing.
Nervous System Support
Ayurvedic medicine has used the vetiver root for centuries to help treat anxiety and support the nervous system. Rich in sesquiterpenes, Vetiver essential oil contains grounding properties. When applied to the skin or inhaled, Vetiver oil provides a calming and grounding effect.
