Essential Oil Diffuser Recipes for ADHD, Autism & Anxiety

Blends to support focus, calm, and nervous system regulation

When you’re supporting children with ADHD, autism, or anxiety, every tool that helps them feel more grounded and regulated counts. Diffusing essential oils is one of the gentlest and most effective ways I’ve found to shift the energy in a space — whether it’s to boost focus during learning time, ease sensory overload, or bring a sense of calm before bed.

These diffuser blends have been part of our everyday toolkit for years. They’ve helped during homeschooling sessions, meltdowns, transitions, and everything in between.

Below, you’ll find some of my go-to blends — each with a short explanation of why I’ve chosen the oils. You can adjust the number of drops depending on your diffuser size and the sensitivity of those in the room.

Mental Focus

  • 4 drops Grapefruit – uplifting and energising
  • 4 drops Lemon – sharpens attention and clears mental fog
  • 3 drops Peppermint – increases alertness and clarity
  • 3 drops Rosemary – supports memory and concentration
  • 2 drops Basil – reduces mental fatigue and encourages clarity
  • 1 drop Wintergreen – refreshing and stimulating

This is the blend I use when we need a serious productivity boost — especially for high-energy days or when we’re hitting a wall during studying.

Study Mode

  • 2 drops Peppermint – stimulates focus and helps with sensory overwhelm
  • 2 drops Frankincense – promotes grounded concentration
  • 2 drops Wild Orange – boosts mood and mental energy

A simple, kid-friendly blend for study time. It smells amazing and helps my boys switch into ‘learning mode’ without being overstimulating.

Concentration

  • 4 drops Lemon – promotes clear thinking
  • 4 drops Rosemary – known for cognitive support
  • 2 drops Peppermint – helps maintain attention

We use this one when attention is slipping — it’s sharp, refreshing, and gently stimulating without being too much.

Quiet Focus

  • 2 drops Lavender – calms the nervous system
  • 1 drop Bergamot – soothes anxious energy
  • 1 drop Frankincense – brings mental presence and calm
  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang – balances emotions and softens overwhelm
  • 1 drop Wild Orange – gently uplifts while supporting focus

A calming blend for those moments when focus is needed, but everything feels a bit tense. Perfect for sensitive nervous systems.

Stay Focused

  • 2 drops Spearmint – promotes clear, positive energy
  • 2 drops Peppermint – supports attention and alertness
  • 1 drop Basil – fights mental fatigue and brings clarity

This one is crisp and motivating. It’s especially helpful during transitions — like moving from a break back into learning or chores.

Focus Blend

  • 3 drops Rosemary – enhances memory and mental stamina
  • 2 drops Lemon – cuts through mental clutter
  • 1 drop Basil – refreshes and steadies the mind

A classic trio that’s bright, focused, and balancing — ideal for older kids or teens.

Calm & Focused

  • 2 drops Vetiver – deeply calming and grounding
  • 2 drops Peppermint – helps re-engage the mind
  • 2 drops Lemon – lifts the energy without overstimulation

For those tricky moments where emotions are high but attention is still needed. Vetiver brings the calm, while the citrus and mint help the mind stay online.

Grounded & Safe

  • 2 drops Cedarwood – promotes serotonin and emotional calm
  • 2 drops Frankincense – centres the nervous system
  • 2 drops Green Mandarin – gentle citrus that soothes without overstimulation

We use this during sensory overload or when things feel chaotic. It helps create a peaceful, anchored feeling in the space.

Light & Calm

  • 2 drops Ylang Ylang – eases emotional tension
  • 2 drops Lavender – supports nervous system recovery
  • 2 drops Wild Orange – brightens mood without overstimulating

Perfect for quiet play, gentle transitions, or decompressing after a busy outing.

Emotional Soothing

  • 2 drops Lavender – calms the body and mind
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile – softens anxiety and emotional distress
  • 2 drops Bergamot – emotionally uplifting and balancing

This blend is like a warm hug. I use it when emotions feel big or unsettled — especially helpful after meltdowns.

Nervous System Blend

  • 2 drops Ylang Ylang – deeply calming to the heart and mind
  • 2 drops Vetiver – stabilises and grounds
  • 2 drops Frankincense – supports emotional resilience
  • 1 drop Patchouli – settles the nervous system

This is one of my favourites for evenings or post-meltdown recovery. It creates a feeling of stillness in the room — something we all need sometimes.

A Few Tips for Diffusing with Neurodivergent Kids

  • Start small – One drop of each oil might be plenty, especially for sensitive noses.
  • Diffuse for short bursts – 15–30 minutes can be enough to shift the energy without overwhelming the senses.
  • Involve your child – Let them help choose a blend when possible. It gives them ownership and helps with emotional awareness.
  • Observe and adapt – What works one day might not work another. That’s okay. Emotional needs change and oils can be flexible.
